They're Doing in America What They Did to Christianity

Trumpism's most telling and characteristic moments – not its most crucial, nor most harsh, nor most dangerous, nor most senseless, but potentially its most enlightening – occurred earlier this fall. During the period of multiple weeks, the American president commenced revealing all observers his designs for an ornate dance hall double the dimensions than the White House and subsequently started independently demolishing the East Wing to erect it.

He has done things 10,000 times as bad – the current estimate of casualties resulting from his reductions to USAID amounts to 600,000 and rising, and recently an analysis predicted his fossil fuel policies would kill an additional 1.3 million. Yet nothing as characteristic. No other president would have dared – really, no previous leader would have contemplated – solo demolishing major areas of the executive mansion in order to erect a Versailles-style party room, with the direct cooperation of some of the richest Americans, almost all of whom conduct transactions with the government.

We went from 'the gentle will obtain the Earth' into 'the humble will perish of cholera'

As bewildering as it is to witness the leader attempt to overturn the traditional concept of democracy and replace it with its complete opposite, there is one large group of Americans who should not find it totally unfamiliar. This includes individuals like us – within elder demographics a near majority – who were raised within mainstream Protestant traditions.

We have observed over the years as rightwing evangelical churches transformed the Christ we learned about into the total contrary of our perception of his character. Essentially, they turned a figure of affection into an icon of hostility who approves specifically the brutality that he condemned in biblical teachings; this change developed more slowly, across decades instead of months, but it is nonetheless disconcerting through similar means, a confusing personal impact for countless people.

A Damaging Christianity Gains Ground

So let me first describe the Jesus from my childhood, as conceptually Jesus is the center of any Christian faith, and because the quickly increasing segment of Americans may possess limited understanding of him because they identify as skeptics or doubters or nones. I take no issue with these different approaches, nor with different religions; but I do think that contain precious wisdom of substantial value in the Christian story.

It is emphatically absolutely not the narrative of an authoritative monarch arising; instead, an infant arrives to parents without shelter in a garage, who are forced to hastily depart to a different country to avoid undercover officers. The baby grows up in simple surroundings, a laboring woodworker; his teaching is about love for fellow humans, particularly for the disadvantaged – not simply tender feelings, but practical compassion, shown by providing food and housing. Christ's response to aggression is to turn the other cheek – not as a gesture of passive acceptance, but as a means to instruct the assailant; his crime policy indicates that whenever an individual takes your coat you ought to provide him your sweater as well.

The obvious and straightforward fact that Christ from scripture requests a type of radical love focused on the needy is what has always made Christian religion something of a scandalous religion: engaging for the masses, but due to its intrinsic extremism demanding to be controlled. During the 1950s it was restrained by dilution – The Protestant faith was so dominant that it practically sanctified existing conditions.

A Conflict for the Highest Within Us

Therefore I have felt encouraged to witness the steadfast resistance to Trump emerge over the last twelve months. It has been significant comfort to help build the campaign that has protested openly via continuous gatherings, and appears to have motivated citizens to participate in numbers during minor elections. We will need to persist with it, and with identical determination, featuring US banners during all protests and calls to the best parts of American history.

We will be questioned ... regarding how you welcomed the immigrant? Did you accept these individuals and embrace them or not?

The nation is most protected, essentially, through connection to the finest about American history, similar to Christianity is best defended through connection to elements that cause it to be unique and magnificent, which is the example of Christ. In neither case does it imply feigning the most damaging regarding America and Christianity did not happen; it represents both modesty and faith, a mixture that serious American Christians ought to accept.
