The Himalayan nation's Electoral Scene Sees Significant Partnership Formed By TV Host and Former Musician Mayor

In a significant development ahead of next year's general election, two high-profile personalities in Nepali politics have teamed up. This alliance comes in the wake of widespread and deadly young people's demonstrations that rocked the country earlier this year and ultimately led to the removal of the incumbent government.

A Commitment to Address Young People's Concerns

Television host Rabi Lamichhane, who leads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a former rapper, have publicly pledged to focus on the grievances highlighted by the younger generation. This promise comes after the turbulent anti-graft unrest that took place in September, which led to considerable casualties.

"Agreement must not be what a leader wants, it should be what the nation requires," stated Lamichhane after the agreement was signed.

The September revolt was sparked by public anger over a temporary government ban on social media platforms. This incident acted as a spark for deeper resentment stemming from years of slow growth and longstanding accusations of deep-rooted political corruption.

Details of the New Electoral Partnership

According to the official pact, the positions for the imminent election have been clarified. Rabi Lamichhane will remain as the leader of the RSP. Meanwhile, Balendra Shah will be the party's candidate for the role of prime minister in the election set for 5 March.

  • Rabi Lamichhane: A well-known 51-year-old TV host, he established the RSP in 2022, channeling widespread discontent with the country's established political class. He has previously served in the positions of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was recently released on bail in a case related to alleged cooperative fraud and organized crime.
  • Balendra Shah (Balen): The thirty-five-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is seen as a key figure in Nepal's current political shift. He played a role in forming the caretaker government that took over after the ousted administration was dissolved.

Wider Political Discussions Underway

In a separate development, the current interim prime minister over the weekend conducted consultations with a number of major political leaders. These discussions involved ex- prime ministers and the heads of other mainstream parties, marking the initial such gathering since the time of the uprising.

After these discussions, the prime minister posted on social media to emphasize that holding a free and fair election is a collective duty. The message affirmed the government's commitment to guaranteeing a secure and open environment for the electoral process, noting that efforts are being made to eliminate any uncertainty.
