Powerful Cyclone Fung-wong Strikes the Philippines: Two Fatalities and Large-Scale Evacuations Confirmed

The island nation has been hit hard by Super Typhoon Fung-wong, which left a minimum of two fatalities and forced the evacuation of over a million residents.

Authorities stated that the massive storm triggered extensive flash flooding, storm surges, landslides, and destructive gale-force winds, leading to the relocation of millions of people across the country.

Widespread Damage and Rescue Efforts

In Pandan, Catanduanes, a severely affected area, disaster response teams recorded floodwaters reaching rooftop levels and residences being swept away by strong flows.

“Our personnel rescued 14 individuals who were trapped on the roof surrounded by water in a low-lying neighbourhood,” an emergency official stated. “A father frantically contacted us, saying his home’s roof was about to be ripped off by the wind. We rescued him and four relatives.”

By Monday, officials announced two fatalities: a drowning victim on the island and a second individual killed when her house collapsed in eastern Samar.

Typhoon Strength and Forecast

The super typhoon weakened to a typhoon on Monday morning while moving over the Philippines’ largest island, where the capital is located.

According to meteorological authorities, its maximum winds decreased from 115 mph to 102 mph, though wind bursts were still reaching over 170 mph.

The storm system is expected to continue weakening while heading north toward Taiwan.

Relief and Assessment

The country’s emergency management agency stated efforts were ongoing to assess damage to infrastructure and homes.

Roughly thousands of shelters have been opened to accommodate tens of thousands of households.

Recent Context and Climate Impact

Fung-wong struck shortly following another severe storm, which killed hundreds of lives and left dozens unaccounted for before moving on to Vietnam, where it killed five.

Searches for those still missing had to be suspended on Sunday due to safety concerns for rescue workers.

Global warming is making tropical storms more intense and common. Fung-wong is the twenty-first storm to hit the Philippines in 2025.

Scientists have found that the frequency of intense cyclones striking the islands has increased doubled over the last two decades.

International estimates indicate that severe weather events result in an average of US$3.5 million in damage to the country every year.

The nation’s leader declared a state of emergency last week because of the extensive devastation from the prior typhoon and the expected damage from the new storm.
