British Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have conducted a mission with French warplanes in a combined operation against an underground arms cache in Syria employed by the IS group, according to the British defence ministry.

The location, identified by intelligence, was thought to be storing arms and explosives, the statement said, and was positioned in mountainous terrain just to the north of the historic site of Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"Our aircraft employed precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to strike a number of access tunnels providing entry to the site... early reports suggest the objective was successfully hit," the MoD said.

There was no sign of any civilian impact in the strike late on Saturday and all the aircraft returned to base without incident, the MoD added.

The British jets were supported by a Voyager tanker plane.

IS - also known as ISIS - imposed extremist governance over significant areas in Iraq and Syria prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This strike underscores British leadership, and commitment to work closely with allied nations, to eliminate any re-emergence of the terrorist group and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the region," the British Defence Secretary the minister remarked.

RAF aircraft have carried out overwatch operations over Syria to "forestall any attempted comeback" of the group subsequent to its defeat at the battle of Baghuz in 2019, the ministry said.

"I extend gratitude to every member of our armed forces involved in this operation for their expertise and their valour," he commented. "They were part of thousands of British troops stationed over the festive period. This operation, to eliminate militants who endanger our security, highlights how our armed forces are always on standby, all year round, protecting the UK within its borders and strong abroad."

In December, the United States armed forces conducted what it called a "massive strike" targeting Islamic State objectives in the country, after an assault killed two US servicemembers and a civilian interpreter in Palmyra.

The U.N. reports IS still maintains between 5,000 and 7,000 combatants in both countries.
